hi there im going to rome on the 23rd of November and i have my flight booked it gets into ciampiano airport at near midnight. My first question is this is there a bus at that time of night into the centre of rome. Also im looking for some cheap accomodation would anyone have any information on where to look for some or a useful website i could look up. And my last question is this should i rent a car as im in rome for a period of 5 days or would it be a waste of time as there would be a lot to see in the city. All answers would be appreciated

Seanie,

First - forget about hiring a car. Rome is a crazy place to drive, parking is a nightmare and impossible to find, and I can't imagine it being possible not to scratch or damage the car, so more cost there. The city centre is very walkable, but bring a good pair of shoes! The buses are very good too, when you get the hang of them

I've used this site a lot for Italian bookings, large selection: http://www.venere.com (www.venere.com) I'm sure if search on AAM you'll find lots of Rome recommendations

The Terravison site hints that all flights have connections to downtown (well Termini railway station anyway) www.terravision.it, even late arrivals but I can't vouch for this myself.

I've used venere too and found them great.

I heard lots of things said about it being dodgy around the Termini train station but have stayed there 3 times and woulndn't stay anywhere else - very cheap, and great location.

Trastevere is great for dinner as is Piazze Navona - esp that time of year where there won't be as many tourists.

Rome is amazing - my top picks are the Pantheon (when you inside look up!), & St Peters in the Vatican and of course the food!!!!

Would be a classy place to pop the question too ;)

Would agree with the above regarding driving. Being a passenger in a taxi was enough to put me of driving in Rome.

Trastavere is great for cheap family run restaurants. I stayed in Hotel Santa Maria in Trastavere (http://www.htlsantamaria.com/english/index.htm) and would highly recommend it.

Very friendly staff, fab breakfast and free nibbles in the bar in the evenings.

I stayed in the Hotel San Remo. It's not the Hilton or anything but it's cheap and adequate. The room is on the small size and has a decent en-suite and is very clean. There is a buffet continental breakfast and the hotel is only a 5 min walk from termini station. The only real fault I had with this hotel was the walls were quite thin. You could hear everything around you. Apart from that it was fine. I found it on [broken link removed]. But you could cheak www.hotelsrus.com or . Check the review comments before booking anything. They will give you a good idea what to expect. I wouldn't book a hotel lower than 3 stars. There ratings are not quite to the standard of Ireland. Anyway hope this helps and enjoy your trip. Rome is a lovely city. Try to do the bus tour on your first day so you will know where most things are from that. As with the reply on your other tread the bus caters for ryanair and easyjet flights so the bus leaves about half an hour after the plane lands.

one more question as im coming in to ciampino at 23 50 hours will i be able to get a bus into the centre of rome

yeah, there's a bus that meets every flight. I arrived there at the same time on a ryanair flight a few months ago. the bus ride into town (termini train station) took about 40 mins. ryanair sold tickets for the bus during the flight (for the same price as they cost from the bus company). I think it cost 8 or 10 euro.
we stayed in a hotel near Termini so the bus was very convenient.

No need to book a car in rome. Rome is walkable. compact but crowds everywhere. they have an integrated bus/metro/tram system where a ticket for €1 lasts for 75 minutes on all transports (1 metro trip only). I stayed in the area near the Termini station. hotels everywhere. all the restaurants I was at were fine. La Vecchia Conca; Hostaria de Nerone (Colosseum) ; Scoglio di Frisio; more here [broken link removed]
