Treatment for hammer toe

Has anyone had this complaint treated - operated on or do you know anyone who has. I would like some information from people's experiences before having a medical consultation - like - is it successfully operable; what complications, difficulties, length of recuperation are generally the norm.

It is easier to discuss a problem with a doctor if you have some knowledge of the likely pitfalls.
