Travel Insurance for Exchange Student

My daughter is going to study in Canada as part of a student exchange program. She is a VHI Member and will also have to take out (compulsory) health insurance while in Canada.

I'm trying to find reasonable insurance to cover her while travelling, especially as she is transitingg Philadelphia. I'm getting quotes of €800 +. Any ideas/options?

Many Thanks.

The premium on its own doesn't really say much about the policy on offer. You need to consider the policy terms & conditions in addition to the price.

The risks I am trying to cover are:

1. Medical costs while transiting/visiting the US.
VHI provides cover for in-patient hospital costs of up to €65,000.
However, with some of the "horror stories" I've heard about re American medical costs I suspect that that is not enough.
(She will have full medical cover in Canada.)

2. General travel insurance - e.g. protection for her possesions (~estimated value €3000) and flight delays, etc. With the quotes I'm getting I would be tempted to carry all non-medical risks myself.

My daughter recently moved to Canada for a year and the insurance was taken out through Usit and cost 600 odd. I did shop around myself but the cheapest was around 400 and it didnt cover all you would like it to so decided to pay the money for peace of mind. Cant remember the name of the company, blue something, but you couldnt actually buy it online even though they did have a website. I rang them but they said they only sold indirectly through travel companies.

The thing about travel insurance is you tend to get what you pay for, carefully read the terms & conditions of all policies when comparing.

Get the best policy you can, even if its extra. It is so important to have travel insurance. I was in the US for June and had a bad fall. Sprained my ACL, have bone bruising and a fracture. Both ER visits are over $1000, excluding GP fees!!! I can't imagine what staying overnight would cost, let alone many nights!
