I'm upgrading a PC at the moment and the owner wants all the data on their IDE drvie transferred to the new Sata drive.I have copying software but wanted to know how I physically get the IDE drive to act as a slave for the Sata drive?

They'll be on different channels, so you can have a master on the SATA channel, and a master on the IDE channel. BIOS will determine boot order.

usually there is a jumper switch on the hard drive which designates whether the hard disk is a master or slave.

On the IDE hard drive there is a jumper but on Sata there is none....so I can just put the jumper of the IDE to Master plug it into the MB and then I can copy to the Sata drive?

Yes, jumper the old drive to master and connect the new drive to the SATA interface. As Leo says, they won't interfere.

If by master you mean master drive that the system will boot from, you need to look in the BIOS settings.

BTW, Serial ATA is a form of IDE! Traditional IDE is Parallel ATA.

Would be easier to leave the old IDE in situ and copy off using network or a removable HD or similiar.

Leaves old and new pc intact.
