Transfer savings from Ireland to USA

Hi,

I am an Irish Citizen resident and employed in the USA on a Greencard since 1996.

I have some savings in An Post and the Irish Permanent that I now wish to transfer over to the USA in order to purchase property.

Can anyone please point me as to where I can get taxation advice on how to accomplish this as tax efficiently as possible? I've asked my US tax preparer but he is not familiar with international tax issues.

Thanks,
Evelyn

There is no tax issue with transferring your savings to the US - unless there is no question of the funds in your Irish accounts (and any interest earned thereon) ever being "hidden" from the tax authorities in the US, where as a green card holder of long standing your are taxable on all earnings worldwide.

Just open a bank account in the US and deposit your funds, via cheque, international funds transfer or whatever method suits you.

And get a better US tax advisor. If you're in NYC I can recommend someone.
