Trading in against used cars

Considering getting a new used car- either a golf or focus (04/05 upwards)- looking at spending max €17K on the car, however I have a 97 Fiesta (Ghia) with 80K on the clock (Full Service History) to trade in against.

What am I looking at to hand over in total approx for a good deal/minimum i should expect??
 

I would try and sell that car privately if I were you. That way you may get around 1500 if you're lucky. Otherwise I doubt that any dealer would consider paying you more than 500 for trade-in for a 97 fiesta, which basically means nothing! (as you'd at the very least get 500 for cash purchase on a 17k deal).
 
Yeah, if you could sell privately it would be better. However, it could be difficult and take a lot of effort to make this private sale. There's a lot of second-hadn private sales on the market at the moment. Maybe try to test the private sale market first to see if there is any interest in your existing car before committing to the new one?
