Traction Control Unit gone in BMW

I had my car serviced at the end of June and nothing major was required, they fitted new brake pads and did the usual oil change. When I bought the car in 2007 I paid for a service pack, so 5 years of servicing included. Therefore I didn't have to pay for the service. 10 days later some warning lights came on, I dropped it in this morning and they told me the car needs a new traction control unit.

Is it normal for this to go in a 3 yr old car? The only driving we do is around Dublin and about once every 2 months we take it to Cork. It was probably driven 3 times from the service to the lights coming on for 10 min trips. I'm a bit surprised by it, any thoughts?

The garage has applied to BMW for a goodwill gesture as the car is reltively new, they're charging €442 all in. It's less than I expected but I'm still surprised it's needed in the first place
