Toyota VVTI Engines.

Hello Folks,

Considering buying a 04-05 Corolla 1.6 VVTI in the U.K but according to Honest John, once the engine covers 40K, it starts to consume Oil at a high rate. Has anyone on here been unlucky enough to have experienced this with a Toyota engine or did these engines once suffer this problem and perhaps Toyota have cured it????
Any advice would be gtateful as i do not want to saddle myself with an oil thirsty car!!!

Toyota replaced a lot of 1.8 engines in their Avensis models f.o.c. Not sure if this is related.

I can't imagine it's a general continuing problem - the VVTi engines are often highly praised.

Does Honestjohn quantify what a 'high rate' is? it might be something that is observable but not nearly as bad as it sounds.
 
Caveat,

Honest John says once the engines have covered 40K, they start to consume a litre of Oil every 600 miles. As this is i think quite high i wonder has anyone got a Corolla Verso and if yes is the Oil Consumption as high as Honest John says.
