Toughened windows

Am building in a place which may receive plenty of wind. Would toughened glass be a better option than double glaze. In case of fire is it possible to break toughen glass. Also would it be much more expensive. Would there be a greater or lesser heat loss with toughened windows.

Sorry I don't know anything about the toughened glass for wind, I know we have to get it on some of our low windows inorder to comply with building regs. It is much more expensive than normal glass. What we have done is to get windows that have a very low U value so that the windows are well insulated. Look for double or even triple glazed low E with Argon gas. Windows have to have a U value of 2.2 to comply with building regs, try to get lower than that if you can. We managed to get .31 of a U value from Marvin but there are loads of Companies that do 1.1, which is very good.

re toughened windows:

have a problem with unit consisting of toughened and laminated glass. the laminated leaf has developed serious cracks without any obvious cause. firm not accepting any responsibility, refusing to do anything about it. window is only in about 3 months. as this is a roof panel, it's very worrying. i am also worrying that other panels from same firm could also develop similar mysterious cracks.

also small window, i.e. framed double glazed ordinary glass, has equally mysteriously cracked after a few months and rationel seem unwilling to replace it.
house is not lived in yet and with all this craic, it's looking farther off.

how can i get these firms to do the honourable thing?
