Tools needed for smooth concrete

am taking old fireplace tiles down and plan to re-do fireplace with antique pine beem mantel. The plnan is to finish vertical (and surround of fireplace) with concrete, possibly with bonding plaster on top. And then probably paint it white

I am aiming for a stone-like look, somewhere between polished stone and rough stucco plaster, i.e. a little bit rustic.

Do people think it will work?
What tool would I use to smooth sand & cement? Would I get a better finish with a wooden float, or is metal better?

a wooden float will give you a sandstone sort of look, when floating use sort of figure 8 sort of motion. a steel float would close it alot smoother with just the normal action of floating

Thanks for your advice Dble8,

I might start off with the wooden float and see how it goes. Thinking of leaving finish as sand/cement render rather than bonding plaster on top.
