I'm looking for a list of 'to dos' that will help me organise a trip to Australia for six months.

melbourne area:
great ocean rd
phillip island [pengiun parade]
melbourne
sydney and east coast:
sydney
hunter valley
byron bay
goald coast
brisbane
sunshine coast
cairns
daintree

western australia-Ningaloo reef and Cape Range NP, Cape le Grand NP, Esperance, Broome, Dunsborough/Margaret River, Kalbarri Gorges (approx.8 weeks)

Queensland-Cape Trib and Daintree, Port Douglas,GBR, Eungella NP and Cania Gorge, Fraser Island, Brisbane,Whitsundays...(5 weeks)

NSW- sydney, blue mountains, (1 week)

Victoria- Grampians, Soveriegn Hill at Ballarat, GOR, Anglesea, Wilsons Prom, Melbourne, Penguin Parade on Phillip Is (4 weeks)

NT- didn't travel as with small kids, will do when they bigger, but have been told excellent trips into Bungle Bungles, Katherine etc.

Try and spend a decent amount of time at fewer stops this will give you better sense of place. We visited above places over 1 and half years with small kids so 6 months of complete travel should easily see all. Again a 'to do' list will depend on your likes/dislikes. We love nature and camping so the NP's of Australia suited us and gave us a good sense of what each state offered.

Happy planning

Add to above:

Western Australia - Perth, Rottnest Island, Monkey Mia, The Pinnacles (Cervantes), Albany.
Sydney - Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras (if there in March I think).

As above posts with one big one thats missing - The Great Barrier Reef, possibly from Cairns?

Dont forget the Whitsunday Islands. Accessible from Airlie Beach.

Whitehaven Beach has to be the most beautiful beach in the world.

Getting back to the original post ...

Tasmania - Cradle Mountain

Melbourne - pretty much everything that has already been mentioned, plus you can take a tour of the city on the back of a Harley (WAY kewl way to see the highlights) and there is a tram car restaurant that takes you on a tour of the city while you dine.

Sydney - Bridgeclimb - expensive, but worth it

If you are into aborigine art etc. or the wilderness and if you are in NT you definitely should consider a trip to Arnhemland http://www.arnhemland-safaris.com/. There is nowhere else like it on the face of the earth and few people visit. And if you are in NT there’s also Kakadu NP, Katherine Gorge, etc. Drive down to Ayer’s Rock, Alice Springs.

East coast is very commercialised especialy Gold coast.

Frasier Island well worth doing, do the 3 days 2 nights camping trip with the 4X4. Roughin it a little but best way to see the island. Can't remember the names but Frasier also has some beautiful white beaches.

Whitsundays amazing also, again the 3 days 2 nights trip on a yacht is great, again can be a little cramped but great way to meet people.

Byron Bay is also very touristy but very relaxing, worth taking a trip to the hippie commune nearby (depending on what you are into!)

Can't remrember the names but there are some small little resorts along the east coast to see.

Beaches on the west coast supposed to be nicer.

Used the greyhound to do the east coast, ticket from sydney to cairns, stop as many times as you like , think its valid for 3 months, not a bad way to travel but a car would be better, more idependence.
