I use it all the time for use within an electronic newsletter I issue each month by email. It prevents long urls disrupting or breaking up the formatting of the email. I find it very useful. The drawback I see with it though is that the receiver has no idea where the url will lead them to. In this day and age of dodgy links within emails this could cause some concern.

I generally use:
[ U R L = web address] some text [ U R L ]
(without the spaces)
Like you have above, and then quickly check the link after posting.
e.g. this thread!
