Timing Belt

Hi

I have a 06 Ford Focus which has only has 40k (km) on the clock. I noticed that the engine was not performing it best a week ago and the engine warning light came on. You could hear the problem when pressing the accelerator.

I brought it into a garage to be fully serviced. I thought this might solve the problem. I got a call to advise that there was water leaking into the engine due to a leak with the water pump. They also said that the spark plugs were soaked with water. They also said that the timing belt needs to be changed.

I told them to go ahead with it and fix the car.

Looking online I see that timing belts only need to be changed every 100k (km).

Should I be concerned that I am being ripped off.

Please advise.

IMHO After 6 years the timing belt is due a change, regardless of milage. It's not just down to a milage/Km thing but time also.

Did you notice any water leaks before you left it in. Did you have to top up the radiator at all.

If so then it seems like the water pump seal may have gone and when that happens in most cases as far as I know it is wise to fit a new timing belt when replacing the water pump as gaining access to do the job is what takes a lot of time and the cost.

Both are more or less in same location.

Did you get a price. Can be a few hundred depending on make etc.

Hi

I did not notice any leaks with it.
I was quoted €400-€450. But I am not sure whether this includes the service.

Timing belts, auxiliary belts, tensioners, water-pumps and in some cases even engine mount bolts are now a kind of all-in-one service package on modern cars.

They all tend to be done as a major service at a set limit - after either "x thousand miles / kms" or "y tears" from new.

OP I believe the info you found online is incorrect
