Hi Off to NY shortly. Our flight coming back leaves at 6pm and we wondered could we spend the morning shopping/sightseeing and at what time should we head off to the airport by taxi to allow for traffic, check in, security, etc. thanks:)
 
You should allow a minimum of one hour for a taxi trip from TS to JFK and join the check-in line a minimum of 90 mins before departure. Altrnatively you can get a train from Penn to Jamica Centre and tansfer to the Skytain which takes you into the Int'l departures area. It's a fraction of the price and you eliminate the risk of freeway delays.
 
If you are travelling by taxi, I'd add on another hour, i.e. give yourself at least three and a half hours from Times Square to flight departure.
It took us one and three quarter hours to travel the journey in November for a similar departure time and when we got to JFK we joined the check in queue on the footpath outside the departure building. We were glad we had allowed ourselves the time. Unless you are flying business class, missing your flight will be costly.
