I have an old timber picnic bench which is in need of care. The varnish has lifted off & the wood is suffering. What is the best way to treat this. I plan to sand off the old varnish, but how do I protect the timber going forward. Any advice appreciated.

Hi BlueSpud,

It pretty straight forward. If you have an electric sander, use it. It will save you time and sore shoulders.

First, sand the varnish with a rough sand paper, brush off the dust that left on the wood, then sand it with a fine sand paper, alway going with the grain of the timber. Again, brush off the left over dust (You could use a hover to take the dust off)

When the surface is nice and smoothe and clean from dust, apply you stain or varnish. Give it as many coats as you think it needs.

Personally, I would use a stain with sealer, then a coat of varnish, then a light sanding, then another coat of varnish. but thats just me. :)
