hi,
like most of the country, things have taken a sudden downturn for the worst for me. i am self employed, but im afraid i am hardly surving on my income at the moment. i also have a wife and 4 kids to support. i was wondering if someone could give me an idea on the threshold of getting the back to school allowances for books and clothes. also, could i get some state help to top up my income to survive. any help would be greatly appreciated, as i have never been in this position before. thank you

Unfortunatley you have to be in receipt of Welfare in order to avail of the Back to School allowance, its not just guaged on income, as far as I know you then apply to the CWO either in the Summer or early Autumn. You are in a difficult situation re allowances as you are Self Employed, but maybe if you have no work or insufficient work / income at the moment you could approach your relavent CWO and discuss the situation with them?
Best of luck

Taken from Citizens Advice:

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) is to help you meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children attending school. The scheme operates from 1 June to 30 September each year.
The Allowance is provided by the Health Service Executive as part of the Supplementary Welfare Scheme.

To get the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, you (parent or guardian) must meet a number of conditions;
  • You must be getting certain social welfare payments or payments for training, employment schemes or adult education
  • Your total household income must be below a certain amount
  • The child/student must be between 2 and 22 years before 1 October of the year you apply and must be in full-time education at a recognised school or college.

There is a set amount allowed for travel costs to/from work, you do not need to provide any evidence of same.
