A friend of mine is thinking about buying her husband sat nav for xmas, any body any thoughts or experiences about it? Is there a particular model or system which works well here?

I use Garmin & I find it very good. There is street level mapping for all of dublin & major towns. Outside of that its major roads only.

We have Tom Tom and Igo (correct name?) and they are OK. I'd say they are 90% up to date, but don't depend on 100%. Used one of these last year in Italy, but it 'forgot' that the Italians drove on the 'otherside' of the road, nothing beats the old fashioned navigator I'd say....

Using Route 66 Mobile - runs on my Nokia N70 with bluetooth connection to a matchbox sized gps receiver left on the dash.

Its all about the maps. They say they have 100% coverage but thats not my experience. However, I would say give it another 6-12 months and a couple of map revisions later and it will be very useful.
