thinking about asking landlord to sell the house

Just wonder if anyone has an experience with trying to buy a house from the landlord. We would like to buy a house just like the one we are renting at the moment and we thought about asking our landlord if he is willing to sell it to us. We have no indication of whether he is intersted in selling or not. Now, we've asked him a good few weeks back to replace windows (single glazed/old wooden mouldy frames) and to do something about the mould in the kitchen, he agreed but nothing has been done so far. From our experience over the past couple of years it seems he doesn't want to invest any money into this house. So our concern is that if we ask him about selling a house to us and he says no, then he'd assume that we want to move and will ignore the current mould issues.. Obviously, if we buy another house, we will eventually move but that could be another year or even more as we are in no hurry to buy a house by the end of the year.. but with two small kids we can't really live in a mouldy house.... Anyone having an experience with dealing with landlord re this?
 
Have you considered moving to another rental property? There is a lot of good quality rental property around these days. You shouldn't have to accept mould & single glazed windows. I would imagine the house is dificult to heat?

You are right, the current house is difficult to heat but with some repairs, insulation, new windows&doors, it could be lovely house to live in. But as I said, the landlord doesn't really want to invest any money into it.

As long as he has renters in the house, stumping up the rent every month he has little actually compelling him to put money into it.
Put in your notice to quit, it may focus is mind.

Also, what is preventing you from asking him if he'd sell?
It would be cheeky to ask him to sink money into repairs and upgrades and then turn around and offer to buy the house, in my opinion.

It looks like moving to another rental is your only option like it or not. As you said yourself your landlord is unlikely to spend any money on the property. Not all landlords are like your current one. Find a more modern rental with a good BER rating. The money you will save alone on heating costs will cover any removal costs.

Putting the health of your family at risk is not worth it!
 
Eros, we don't want to get the repairs done and then ask to sell, we are just concerned that if we ask and he says no, then he won't do any repairs although they are urgently needed...
GNR, I suppose you are right, we are just hoping to buy a house rather to rent again but if he says that he doesn't want to sell then we might look into renting some better place for a while...
 
I think you have very little to lose by telling him you are going to move on because you are buying your own home.

He will then realize that he has to pay a lot of money to do up the house before he can rent it again.

He may offer you the house.

It may take some time to find a new house, so you might be better off staying where you are. If you move, the new landlord will want a 12 month lease.
