Think my mechanic might be ripping me off!!!

Hi All,

Just a quick query.

My 07 Ssangyong Kryon has been giving me trouble and my mechanic said it was the fuel injectors. He said the cost would be about 1200. Now i must say i really like this guy and have been dealing with him for years and have never questioned him before so gave the car to him ASAP.

That was over 2 weeks ago and now he is telling me that one of the fuel injectors cracked when they we trying to take it out and because of this its going to be €2500!!!!! They need to take out the head gasket to get at it.

My question is should I be paying for the labour it took a break it and should i be paying for the labour it took to fix it. Now as opposed to reconditioning 4 injectors, I am paying for 3 reconditioning and 1 brand new injector.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Why don't you ring another mechanic and get a price for similar job? If it's the nearly the same, then you will have peace of mind you're not been ripped off. If the alternative price is lower then you can use it to encourage your mechanic to give you a better deal.
 
I'd do what Guns N Roses suggests. Injectors can be eye-wateringly expensive. I would probably enquire as to whether all four really needed to be reconditioned, maybe only one or two were blocked, maybe he can get a generic rather than an official new part.
 
Some of them can get lodged very tight and the average mechanic cannot get them out. There are guys with hydraulic pullers that specialise in removing the hard to remove injectors.
 
Injectors seize in the head because there has been a previous leak of combustion gasses by the injector seal. Totally preventable on service . Bear in mind the injector has the possibility of getting destroyed on removal. No easy way out of it. The engine is probably a merc engine which is notorious for blowby the injectors.
 
He should of told you before he went at them that there was a risk of further work being required; they can be a nightmare.

I've heard it called the black death on mercs. When not addressed it leads to a carbon deposit on top of the injectors that goes hard.
