going to Dundalk for the weekend with 2 children, any suggestions of things to do, places to see, or good restaurants, would we be better travelling further north during the day

A lot depends on the age and interests of the children.

The Cooley Peninsula offers spectacular scenery, the picturesque town of Carlingford, and outdoor activity centres.

For history, you could travel to Newgrange (it's closer to Drogheda but not too far from Dundalk).

There's an ice rink in Dundalk if the children are old enough for that sort of thing.

Thanks for that, children are 11 and 12, so if its lashing rain ice skating would be great, I have been to Carlingford and it is lovely, but never to Newgrange

At their ages, they might enjoy outdoor activities if it is not raining (or even if it is!). Have a look at [broken link removed] and http://www.carlingfordadventure.com/ They are both on the Cooley Peninsula.

If you head for Newgrange, you should make a little time for Monasterboice to see the round tower and the high crosses. According to some people, Muiredeach's cross is the finest there is.

How about the Animal Sanctuary at Collon? See the lynx that escaped from a Belfast garden.

Closed on Fridays.

That could be fitted in neatly with an excursion to Newgrange and Monasterboice.

Alas, the lynx in Collon Animal Sanctuary is no more. He passed away a week or two ago.
