Things to do around Las Vegas?

I'm headingover next year for a friend's 30th and we're spendin three days in Vegas and another 5/6 driving Big Sur.

Other than the Grand Canyon are there many other things to do between LA and Vegas?
 
You will need a few days in Vegas itself walking around. Each casino offers different attractions, from lions to rollercoasters, plus plenty of malls and street entertainment. Don't forget to spend a bit of time in old town, and catch the light show at night (called the Freemont Experience). I personally prefer old town and used to stay up there once I had been on the Strip a few times. Fantastic nightlife too.

We drove from LA to SF incorporating the Big Sur. It was nice (we have nicer here tbh) but apart from staying in the lovely Santa Barbara for a few nights, there isn't much else to see and 5/6 days would certainly be excessive. I'd recommend hanging around SF for a few days.
 
The Hoover Dam is another attraction.
From my point of view there is so much to do in Vegas.
I have been there a few times and everytime I find something to do that I didn't realise was there the last time.

I'll post again once I have a list sorted.
 
The gun store. Fancy shooting a few rounds on an AK47, this is the place.

If you decide to go to a Cirque de soleil show, go to the Beatles themed "love" at the mirage. It's jaw dropping!
 
Just back from there and while i dont like the place, theres plenty around it. Depends what you like to do. For Hiking and photography valley of fire is mega, easy to spend a day there and it gets better at sunset. Nelson is cool, kind of a vegas ghost town! Grand canyon north or south rim is a long drive from vegas and the north rim is closed for winter. Death valley is closer.

Yes I will second that but try to go during the week rather than at weekend as you can be waiting two hours then (unless you are willing to pay a $50 frontline fee)
 
I was in Vegas over the summer and in addition to the Grand Canyon we went to Death Valley and Yosemite over in California.

Death Valley is less than two hours drive away so very easy to do on a daytrip.

However Yosemite is 7-8 hours away so you will need to spend at leat one night away (but oh boy, it is worth it!!!). However be careful of what time of the year you go as during the winter and spring months and sometimes even up to the beginning of June, the Tioga Pass entrance is blocked by snow (at an altitude of 3000m), this is the east entrance to the park and the most direct way in from Vegas; otherwise you will have to go around south of the Sierra Nevada mountains and go through the West entrance which would add several hours to your journey.

We did both together over two and a half days as Death Valley is on the way to Yosemite.
 
Oh also in additon, if you want to see the spectacular waterfalls in Yosemite, May, June or July (and maybe August) is the time to go as the snow which starts to melt in the mountains in April/May takes that long to keep the waterfalls to flow. By September though, they have dried up to a trickle
 
My sister did a SF-LV tour a couple of years ago and raved about Lake Tahoe as well as most of above.
