Some little white grubs, they look like tiny grains of rice are eating my wool carpet in just one corner. Any ideas what to do?

Yeah, without seeing a picture I can't say for definate but propably the larvae of the case making moth, google it and check the pics.
Collect a few of the little critters and keep in a jam jar to show to the pest controllers. Lift the carpet at the edges and hoover "very diligently" the edge, the floor underneath and indeed the whole carpet. Do this every 2 days for a few months.
Check for small thin black moths in the room/house. They are usually much more stationery than typical flies. They need to breed to lay eggs on the carpet for the larvae to hatch.
Check your clothes for moth holes, wash everything and clean presses, drawers etc. Throw out everything you don't use regularly.
It's a tough job to eradicate these things.

When we had a problem with insects many years ago I was advised to be careful when using the hoover as this can carry the problem to a different area of the house.

Many thanks for your replies. Why didn't I think of Moths?
The carpet, underlay etc is gone and disposed of and the hoovering is under way. Hope I don't spread anything, so better empty the bag at least

You can buy spray to kill moth larvae and moths in that great hardware shop in Dublin's South Great George's St. They also sell plastic pads to place in wardrobes to kill larvae and moths. I've haven't seen these products anywhere else.

I had the same problem with my carpets being eaten; I tracked down the cause: the larvae came in, or on, a bag of cat-litter I bought.
