We are in our new build now a year and my father-in-lay is steady at us to put thermostats on our radiators. Anyone any experience of this? Is it big job, costly? Is it worth it - ie saving on oil etc? Thanks.

Hi MrsBell,

I preume you're referring to thetmostatic valves, or TRVs? If so, try these search results.

I've retrofitted them myself and while they are excellent for controlling the comfort level of heating you want I''m not sure that you'll notice a huge drop in oil/ gas consumption over the short term. To maximise on the benefits of fitting TRVs you really need to bump up the insulation levels in your house, as a minimum you need 300mm of mineral/ glass fibre in the attic space, in addition to the usual draught sealing to minimise air leakage.

Thanks folks - all duly noted in my little book, so I'll be able to have a conversation with the plumber rather than him blinding me with science!!
