The steps involved in buying a house?

I am currently considering getting my foot on the property ladder but I am completely in the dark on the processes and steps involved. I would appreciate it hugely if someone could give me a bit of a general step by step run through of everything involved.... i.e. where to start, mortgage approval, mortgage brokers, fixed/variable rates, bidding......
I know this is a fairly broad request but any help would be great, thanks.[/FONT]

One thing I will say is to keep a journal.

Having something on paper, especially when solicitors take a long time to get things finished, is invaluable when it gets close to completion.
