the not so favourite topic..Bulgaria

Even before I write this, I’ve a feeling the feedback will be negative.
I was one of those naïve persons who purchased in Bulgaria 2 years ago. It’s in a 5 star hotel in Bansko. It is almost completed and will be open for this ski season coming. We have been out to see it as we are keen snow boarders and intend on using the studio every year. The hotel is fabulous and the rooms very chic.
This is not a short term investment at all like others.
Maybe I’m grasping at straws but because it’s one of a very small number of 5 star hotels in Bansko, does this not give it an edge?
Also seeing as we’re not looking for a quick buck but see this as something to get away to once or twice a year, are we still naïve??

I was in Bansko a couple of years ago and what really put me off was the massive over construction going on and the amount of flat land around the mountains that was going to ensure continued new construction! I did hear that they are limiting new construction in Bansko but I don't believe this because brown envelopes gets over this in Bulgaria.

If you're mainly buying for personal use and you're happy with the apartment, ski slopes, prices etc then you've a cheap skiing holiday every year. Your chances of making much money from this are slim. The fact that this year Bansko got very little snow this year won't help things.

If you bought for personal use, and you are happy to keep going to Bansko year on year, then its not a problem. However if you want to use the term "investment" with regards to your purchase, you have not done yourself any service.

My advice to anyone who wants to go to Bansko every year would be to rent. There are loads of properties coming on stream that will be cheap to rent, and when/if you outgrow Bansko as your skiing improves, you won't be tied to the place.

I was in Bansko in February and it was a pleasant suprise. It was busy with lots of skiers even though there wasn't much snow(they do have snow machines) and it certainly wasn't the complete building site I was primed to expect.

A studio in a 5 star is probably a better investment than a cheap two bed in a budget development. If you can service the finances and are going to use it yourselves I see no reason why you shouldn't be happy with your purchase. Just because a stranger on a forum says it is a bad buy it doesn't mean it is. Enjoy your property.

Anyway, I have invested in apartments in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria. One of them was completed last year so I'm going to holiday there for the first time this summer. My family went last year and said it was fab, they had a ball ... so I'm hoping that this year it will be just as much fun. In terms of rentals, I've had no luck yet, but to be honest haven't really tried too hard, I'm just hoping to have a nice place to go to holiday in for a few years and then sell on with a bit of a profit. Wish me luck!!!
