They want to ban landlords from buying some houses and in one area they require landlords to have a permit the granting of which is subject to not charging excessive rents.

Are we really anti-landlord?

My impression is that the public would be anti landlord, but are ignored by the Government, who are positive towards landlords (albeit rather large scale corporate landlords, to individuals with a small number of properties).
 
Surely, the massively high level of rents is hugely pro-landlord?

We have some of the highest rents in the world.


I acknowledge here that some (many?) rents are below-market due to RPZ.

And yet few property owners are entering the business; and many more are leaving.

I wince at the current rental rates & yet I have to apply it as otherwise I'm devaluing my property.

We've been round the loop more than once on this board re the rental market & I'm not sure theres much more to add.

But I will still argue that the current impasse is as bad for tenants as it is for property owners.

We are pro bad tenant given the ridiculous time it takes to terminate a tenancy for non-payment of rent and near-impossibility of withholding a deposit for damage to property.

Indirectly this disadvantages good tenants as landlords leave the market.
