You pick, say 10 publicly quoted companies, e.g. CRH, Ryanair, Apple.
As I've mentioned before, another option might be to choose one or more already diversified conglomerate stocks and just buy them as an alternative to trying to select and periodically manage/rebalance a diversified basket of shares. I've mentioned this before, e.g. here:
A combination of laziness and bamboozlement is the reason that I took this approach myself.
