Disgraceful behaviour... a 70-year-old delegate to the Fine Gael Ard Fheis was kicked in the legs and punched in the ribs.

Seems that the rather weak turnout is also a sign that the boycott the HC charge are not getting the backing they thought they had,which is good news.

Gardai estimate the number of protesters to be 5,000. Protest organisers put the figure at 10,000.
Two protesters attempted to push their way through a security cordon but were pushed back by gardai.
People inside the Convention Centre have been told to move away from windows to avoid "antagonising the crowds".
A near riot broke out during the protests when a Fine Gael delegate who resembled Phil Hogan tried to pass through the crowd.

The man was engulfed by angry protesters and jostled before gardai came to his rescue.

As they attempted to escort him from the area they were surrounded by screaming protesters, some of whom shouted “shame on you Hogan.”
The man was visibly shaken as he was put into a Garda squad car and driven away at speed.
Earlier a number of Fine Gael delegates who ventured through the crowd were also subject to verbal abuse

thedaras, you were posting here during the week claiming if people didnt go to this that they didnt really support non payment, and surely if you wanted people not to pay you would go.

You have provided a perfect example of why many ordinary people would not go. I personally wouldnt want to be associated with that kind of behaviour, which is likely to happen at something like this - you'll always get the small section of looneys who just want to resort to violence.

You are missing the point,those who organised this march were calling on non payers to support the march..that didnt happen..you seem to be saying that the million didn't turn up because they feared violence..

I know people who were at the march and they are anti everything(that involves their money) and angry at everything..it was nothing to do with the household charge,just a chance to let off some of their venom,thankfully they are in the minority.

You are missing the point,those who organised this march were calling on non payers to support the march..that didnt happen..you seem to be saying that the million didn't turn up because they feared violence..

Clearly I am missing the point - I honestly dont understand the point you are making.

Im saying that many people would not go to a march (for anything) because of a minority of people who would cause violence. I never said anything about why a million people didnt go - although if Id to guess Id say it was for a number of reasons, mainly that just not paying is objection enough.

People are protesting by not paying. Irish people are not like Greeks, but with pathetic comments form the politicians maybe this is the turning point.
