While shopping on tesco's uk music download page (yes I am paying for downloads) I was told that I should register my Tesco card with verified by Visa and was prompted to go to

And behold the registration actualy work.

Verified by Visa is now required by a lot of shops I buy online and thanks to this (wonder why they did not tell us) I can continue to get points.

Now we can only hope that next step is an online account view, I mean even Permanent Tsb can do it RBS should be able to do it too ;-)

Thanks brainlessareus,

I havent come across 'Verified by Visa' before. How does it work and what are the advantages to the purchaser? Im assuming which allows you proove that you are the genuine cardholder, is this correct? Is the technology fully developed? Does MasterCard have something similar?

NIB introduced this for their Visa card holders earlier this year. It isn't rocket science - just another password layer. See [broken link removed] and a mention of the Mastercard equivalent.

Verified by Via and MasterCard SecureCode

It's not rocket science, I agree with rainyday, but it is helpfull and offers additional security as as it displays a defined phrase (which you set up) before you pay so you can be sure the merchant web page is a real one.

It's an additional password protection but it's also showing you that the site you are using is a geniune one You also don't need to enter all card data, number is enough, the rest is stored.

In additon some shop (in the US) I use spare me a verification via phone/fax for orders as this process tells them I am the cardholder.

More info is here:

usa.visa.com/personal/sec...works.html

Mastercard has a similar one called MasterCard SecureCode and info is here

www.mastercard.com/securecd/welcome.do

Re: Verified by Via and MasterCard SecureCode

Does the provision of the verification code from the signature strip on the back of the card not address at least some of the same concerns?

re: CCV

Clubman, CCV is nice but I think the concern of credit card fraud over the internet is so big in the US that that alone is not always good (someone in a shop could have cloned your card for example) so this way (as you in the US for example registering requires your SSN and in Europe other private data) they now the card is good as the verification is done by the bank. I also think that their insurance covers them better against fraud when they use verified by Visa.

And it gives me a good feeling too because on the page where I need to enter my password I see my phrase so I know I am covered by my card's insurance.

They could clone the data on the magnetic strip using a skimmer but unless they disappear off with the card temporarily (something that people are warned against happening) I don't see how they are going to clone the verification code on the signature strip.

cloned your card for example

Unless you have an amex the CCV is on the back next to the signature (which one must check, right as if) and I guess I could remember a couple of CCV's until I have time to write them down but I remember all my credit card numbers by hard anyhow, so maybe it's just me.

PIN and CHIP is good against fraud in that sense but unfortunatly there are too many standards out there so it's not compatible anywhere.

I still carry the french paper card of my bank with me saying in french that the Chip is not compatible with the french system because try to convince a french vendor to swipe instead of Chip is not that easy.

Tesco Credit Card

Am thinking of switching to the Tesco card. Does this have an online facility? I quite like the MBNA internet access that I currently use - very useful!
