Terrible mobile phone reception - can you do anything to improve it?

Our mobile phone reception (Vodafone) at our house is terrible. Can anything be done to improve it? (e.g. is there such a think as a signal booster / aerial that you can put on your roof, etc.?)

Yes you can get a signal receiver and hard wire back into a central point in your house where it gets transmitted, but they are not cheap, bout €400 or more
