Temporary Lay Off

Hi,
This is my first time posting on AAM although I am an avid browser!
Unfortunately my first post is to be a sad one.I was given a letter today in work informing me of immediate temporary lay off.I am aware that after four weeks I can claim redundancy but do not if I can at all avoid it wish to take this route. Some of my colleagues are on temp layoff for up to and over 15 weeks.
My questions are :
Is there a "definition" of temporary so to speak in employment law.
Just how long can temporary be?
Can it last a year or more or is there a cut off point?
Also if I do not claim redundancy after the four weeks am I still entitled to it further down the line?
At what point should an employer issue notice,I am due 6 weeks notice as I am there 10 years.
Is temp lay-off a scam by the employer in some cases so as not to issue a period of notice and then pay redundancy.
Lastly what is the current timeframe for claiming unemployment benefit and if one is sick can they apply for illness benefit while on temp lay-off.
Sorry for all the questions.
Any help would be much appreciated,I have been in touch with my union and will make calls on monday but I would love to hear from anyone in or who has been in this situation or anyone who can advise me.
