My daughter (18 years old) inadvertently gave her PPS number to taxrebate.ie. We only discovered this when her tax rebate for last year did not end up in her account. We see that is was paid to this company instead.

I'm pretty horrified to read that this company charges 30% of any rebate it "earns".

Before we click in to their system to claim back her refund, does anyone here know if there is a way of avoiding or at least reducing this extreme charge?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as the poor thing is stressed out!

How did she do this inadvertently?

Yes, it's clearly stated on their website.
We do not charge for the service unless the Revenue Commissioner issue a rebate. We offer a net pay out of 70% meaning that we retain 30% of any repayment secured

Do you really believe that they would have advertised the 30% charge on the catch form they used on the internet? Not a chance. It would have been buried deep in their Ts & Cs, which nobody reads.
This is a young girl who was caught out by unscrupulous means.
THIRTY per cent!

But thanks for your contribution...

It's literally on their About Us page that I linked to.
What's a "catch form"?
What form are you referring to?

It's foolish to sign up to any agreement without at least skimming the terms and conditions.

What unscrupulous means?

An 18 year old is an adult who can make their own choices and decisions.

30% is a hefty cut but some people might be happy to pay that for somebody else to do their claim for them. I know people who have used these services. If they're charging the 30% that's clearly stated up front then I don't see where the "overcharging" arises. And there's no evidence of unscrupulous practices here so far.

She would have signed their authorisation form. Did she apply before or after 1st Jan 2025?

I suppose my point is that, while not ILLEGAL, the charge of 30% is totally unreasonable!

If you don't think 30% is unscrupulous, here's a definition: having or showing no moral principles; not honest or fair:
It's a high charge but very clearly laid out so I don't see anything unreasonable, unscrupulous, immoral or unfair about it. If someone doesn't want to pay it then they're free to decline their services.
