Taxman looking for money back

Hi., I received a cheque last march from revenue re over payment. Thye now want it back any advice. I received a payment from them in May and this mistake was not noticed.

Do you owe it? Was it a mistake on their part?
There is an onus on the taxpayer to check and, if necessary, to repay.
If you don't owe it, then explain to them that it is not due and why.
If it is due, then I think you just have to repay it.

If you do owe it then you may be able to get them to collect it gradually via a reduction of your tax credits rather than in a single lump sum. Depending on the specifics of the situation, the amount due etc.
