Hi Folks,

We are coming home to Ireland from abroad for 2 weeks at Christmas. I am wondeing how I go about taxing my car in Ireland. Or is it neccessary to tax the car for a two week period.

Just to complete the picture the car has been off the road for a number of months untaxed but by the time I return I will have the necessary form approved by Gardai.

I will have my papers to prove that I am returning to my residence (Switz) of work early January. Can anyone shed light on this situation.

Any help much appreciated.

You will have to bring the declaration form that the car was off the road as signed off by the Garda to your local motor tax office and complete form 100A, you will not pay for the period off the road but if returning this month you will pay a minimum 3 months car tax starting December 1st, assuming you get here before our friends in local government take their Christmas vacation.

Is the car insured?

Might be cheaper to hire a car for a fortnight.
