Taxi Drivers again!

I use the same taxi man regularly. He only works when he feels like it..semi retired and bought the plate so that he'd have something to do when he retired in earnest.

He jokes about the fact that 'he's off out this afternoon, to fleece a few punters'!!
 
I can see that this is one arguement I'm not going to win!!

I agree with you onekeano, €60 is crazy money from Dublin to Ratoath, (its just over 15 miles or 24 kilometres). At those prices you can understand why some people do runners!!

My point was that when hubby was a hackney, it wasn't that bad! Dublin Airport to Leixlip was £20, (15 mile journey).

Unfortunately a lot has changed in the last 5-10 years - petrol/diesel is sky-high and hackney insurance has always been expensive, (as stated in my post, hubby used to pay around £3500 - thats nearly €4500) and then there's the genuine risk of injury - from thieves.

Like any business, you'll always come across chancers, just don't think it's fair to tar them all with the same brush.

I don't think anyone is calling all taximen chancers. Just wish they could make a logical argument about why exactly they are so unhappy with the new charges. To me it seems a fair deal of give and take. The regulator has even said he will probably increase the fares again next year. This crazy luggage charge is all I am hearing about which makes me think that they are making a fortune off it. Most taxi drivers I have spoken to recently have said they have no intention to strike and there is just a small militant few making it difficult for the rest of them
 
My daughter was charged 12 euro last night to come home in a taxi. Journey was less than 2 miles. She says she's never giving a taxi driver a tip again!! If she hadn't been in heel, she would have walked!

I totally agree. The small militant few seem to be the old codgers who work the Airport. They love fleecing tourists arriving with plenty of bags and no awareness of the Geography of Dublin.

These are the ones who now have on the back of the their TAXI's "Was no. 45x7x" to let people(God knows who?) know that they have an original Taxi licence and not one of the new licences as all Taximen have now been given new numbers. Sad really.

I'd be very doubtful that the Unions would try to arrange a strike during the Ryder Cup because there is no way that the vast majority of selfemployed Taxidrivers would be prepared to miss an opportunity to make a killing during the week of the Ryder Cup.

Usually it's these militant old codgers from the Airport who get envolved and vote at Union meetings so it would be possible for the Unions to pass a strike motion if they wanted, but I suspect the Union would not like to see itself with egg on it's face when the strike is ignored by the vast majority of drivers.
 
I actually heard a story from a taxidriver at the weekend telling me how he picked up two tourists in the city centre to go to the airport. They wanted to agree the price before hand so he just said between 20 and 30 euro depending on traffic and they shook on it. He thought they were just being a little bit over the top. Until they told him a lovely taximan charged them 80 euro to go from the airport to the Westin hotel in Westmoreland st when they arrived. Apparently they got to see the sea and everything on the way in!!!!
 
It cant be just chance

Taxis on strike again this morning and once again Dublin 'rush hour' is abnormally easy for a working day ( never mind that schools are back and its a Monday with all those doing their weekly commute )

Perhaps taxis should be banned during morning and evening peak times ?

This happens everywhere -- some people will try and take advantage of foreigners. After a heated argument in halting Italian (after what should have been a 10 min suburban airport journey turned into a 25min motorway cruise!), I now always agree a price in advance before taking a taxi.
 

Had the same experience in Rome.

I can see it now
* 1c fares anywhere in Dublin (plus taxes, charges, and payment processing fees.).
* Your journey ends a 10 minute walk from your actual destination, when the cabbie sees another fare he can pickup (he's paid extra for fast turn-around)
* Endless chatter from the driver replaced by a sales pitch for scratch cards, coffee and snacks (actually a taxi that offered hot snacks could be quite popular on early runs to the airport or late runs home from town)
* Extra charges for carrying baggage (oh wait, they already do!).
