Below is a quote obtained by me this morning from Ryanair for 'Dublin to Frankfurt' and back for the end of this month of July

Going Out (Web fare)
1 @ 9.99 EUR 9.99 EUR
Taxes, Fees & Charges
details 22.74 EUR

Coming Back (Reg fare)
1 @ 24.99 EUR 24.99 EUR
Taxes, Fees & Charges
details 14.49 EUR

Can somebody explain why the return journey is more expensive but has less Taxes, Fees & Charges ? If these Taxes, Fees & Charges are not calculated from the ticket price then what are they calculated from ?
And presumably since the ticket was quoted as bought in Ireland then why would taxes and airline fees not be the same ?
And another thing . Since each ticket means you use both airports at both ends anyway then why should airport fees be any different either ?

Not necessarily - different airports charge different fees to airlines for example, possibly different landing and taking off fees and fees that are unrelated to the actual flight price.

Sign, Clubman is correct , most of the various 'taxes" are not calulated on the airfare they consist of fees and charges that are specific to the airports involved.

Yep, an example of that being Gordon Brown's £10 departure tax from UK airports.

Thx for the replies. I assumed there would be a reason for it but am not aware of any departure taxes for either Ireland or Germany so the extra price must be somewhere in baggage handling and landing slots.

I dont want this thread moved to Letting off steam...
but as prices stand for me its the equivalent of lollypop + 'rent of space in shop to put lollypop' + 'lollypop transport to shop charge' and I find it all really annoying.

Does anyone know if the EU has moved to change how ticket prices are displayed ? I remember hearing about it a long time ago but havent seen any chang yet.

I remember there was a head of steam about this a while ago, and airlines were supposed to include "costs which the passenger cannot avoid" in the advertised price.
I guess M O'L and/or his cohorts found a way to avoid this, since it clearly didn't happen.

Ryanair's adverts (in the newspapers) are now quoting fares inclusive of taxes and charges.

I presume the logic in separately detailing taxes & charges as part of the booking process is to highlight just how much or how little of the total fare is being absorbed by govt taxes and airport charges. I think this is worthwhile and in the interests of transparency. If the UK govt for example is happy to impose higher taxes on travel, I think it is only fair that those who pay the taxes (ie the travelling public) are at least aware of their existence.

In my own business as an accountant, we always make sure to detail outlay costs (eg Companies Office filing fees) separately on invoices to clients. So do insurance companies who always detail the cost of the 2% govt levy on top of the insurance premium.
