Taxation on Rented House

Hi,
My ex-partner & I bought a house in 2001 & let the property for rent in 2006 (after owning for +5yrs).
Currently my ex-partner is unemployed. Can he claim the total rent as his income & therefore we both avoid paying tax on the rental income (I'm empolyed)? As it is, the rent just covers the mortgage, so we dont make any surplus on the rental income. OR do we both have to claim 50% of the rental income.
