Taxation as a Career

Hi All,

Looking for advice from those working in taxation in practice and in industry.

Basically I did a BComm and then went into IT and work in Support and earn circa 50k a year.

Back in 2003 I earned a lot less and everyone was on a pay reduction and was thinking about whether I made the right career choices and after talking to people working in tax ,etc decided to do the AITI exams.

I passed the first 2 yrs and am doing my finals in Sept and all without my company knowing.

I had an interview last week and got offered a tax trainee position at 20k which is good considered what some firms pay in Cork.

My question is broad and I have looked at recruitment sites but can anyone who works in the area give me some indication of what would could earn in the coming 1-5 yrs after qualifying. I realise this depends on the individual and the amount of consultancy work you can turnover / generate, etc but any feedback would be appreciated.

Should I move this to Taxation as obviously none of the Tax Consultants look in Work, Careers, etc:)

Have to make my decision by cob tomorrow and think I will take the less risky option and stay where I am but complete the qualification in Sept as security in case my current job goes pear-shaped

I very rarely appreciate "bumping" of posts, regardless of how urgent a query is.

FWIW, I would say that you would more than double your starting salary within 5 years of qualifying, possibly by the third year. But I base this on the situation in the Big 4, smaller practices may be different.

Is there any real need to take the first job offered? If you are very nearly qualified, I would have thought there would be fairly high demand for your services, at least in Dublin anyway.

Your practical inexperience may count against you of course.

If you are really ambitious, you could always do ACA/ACCA post getting your AITI qualification, someone who is qualified in both taxation and accounting is very marketable.

Thanks CCOVICH for your reply, tis appreciated.

I have declined the offer but will complete the finals in Sept and reassess should I pass.

Have applied for AO in the Revenue but this could be like the lotto depending on how many apply.

Have definitely considered ACA/ACCA but would hope to take something later in the yr and then try to complete these within a work environment, am based in Cork.
