Taxation after marriage

Hi,

I got married a year ago (yey for me :) ).

Anyway, as my wife and myself are basically on the same salary with only a couple of hundred euro separating us gross anually I was wondering if there's any point informing the taxman.

From what I can see on the paye tax credits side, it's only beneficial if one person is earning much more and can combine the credits for both. Is this true ?

I always wondered about the Tax Credits mentioned in the budget.
eg. €500 for a single person and €1000 for married couples. Basically that's the exact same ?! Or is it that your tax credits double each when you get married, so each spouse gets €1000 whereas if you were single, each person only gets €500.

Can someone clarify what benefit there is to someone like me & wifey registering as a married couple for taxation purposes?

We have a mortgage and are still receiving FTB allowance too, if that makes any diff.

Thanks folks.

If you are both earning over 34k per annum, there is no benefit in being jointly assessed.

You are better off to inform them anyway, but still be treated on a separate basis, as it's not always possible to change immediately if circumstances change.
