Tax wise, how much can I write off a new purchase?

I've been working as a sole trader for the last few months and am of the understanding I can write certain purchases off against my tax returns, if I use them for my work.

I am in the process of buying a PC, for around €1500, and am wondering how much of this can be written off? Is there a guide somewhere which explains it?

Anything useful in the "Businesses" section of the [broken link removed]?

You should really be asking an accountant this sort of question.

Yeah I'm going to one next week! I was hoping I could find out in the mean time. I'll have a look at that site.

Fixed assets (such as computers) can be written off at 12.5% of the cost per annum - so that it is written off over eight years.

However, if your personal use of the asset is likely to be significant at all, then you should adjust for that.

depending on what you do for a living the pc will be considered a business asset. Obviously a web designer will have more use of a pc than a carpenter.

It will therefore depend on the amount of use your business gets out of the pc or if it is used solely for posting on askaboutmoney.com.
