I am self employed since may last year, 2007 and at the moment I am getting accounts ready to bring into accountant.
I have made a loss last year due to start up costs in business and I hope to be able to claim tax back. I was just wondering how long this should take to receive any tax back and also should I change over my tax credits to my wife who is paye.

If you commenced in May 2007 and have done accounts to 31/12/07, then provided (a) everything is present that is required and (b) your accountant can get to them fairly quickly then any overpayment due from calculated s/employed losses being set against PAYE income/tax, would, if filed through Revenue Online Service only take a couple of weeks. However as said in (b) the main timescale here is how long it will take your accountant to get to them and through them.

Mrs Joe1234 commenced self employment in 2007 and I filed her return online on 15th February. The assessment was issued on 21st February and the refund cheque appears to have been issued yesterday.

I had the accounts completed by about 10th January, but the main delay was getting Quinn healthcare to process my medical insurance claim so that anything they didn't cover could be claimed on our med 1.
