My parents are elderly ie OAPs.. my father was self employed, nother hasnt worked (outside of home)since she got married.. they are in receipt of OAP pension only.. no other income...do they have to file a tax return?
Very basic question I know, so TVM

do they have to file a tax return?

Do they receive statements of tax credits from Revenue as a matter of course at the start of the year? What is their income? Do they pay any tax at the moment? If they file once and the tax credits are correct thereafter there is usually no need to file each year unless circumstances change so that they end up liable for tax or can avail of additional credits/allowances. [broken link removed] is useful for roughly estimating one's tax liabilities. If in doubt get professional advice.

Because your father was self-employed is irrelevant. He is not self-employed now.

There should be no need to file a tax return. Maybe call your fathers local tax office and ask is he still registered for any taxes. If he is not SE anymore he should not need a VAT, PAYE/PRSI, RCT, or income tax number.

Basically, the answer to the question is call 1890 333425 and ask them - quoting your fathers PPS number. Maybe even call your fathers old accountnat and ask them for peace of mind.
