Hi,

I was just wondering how the tax relief on service charges should be handled for married couples. For the past few years (before we were married) I have being receiving service relief for the total amount of our bin charges. I notice my wife doesnt claim any relief on these charges. For her to claim relief would we both have to claim relief on half the total amount or can be both claim on the total amount.

e.g our bin charges are 500 euro, can we each claim relief on 500 or can we only claim relief on 250 each (or more likely I leave the 500 relief against my own name as we are jointly assessed). Any comments appreciated...

Isn't there a €400 limit on charges that qualify for relief or is this leaflet out of date?

You cannot both claim relief on the same charges.

Yes - subject to whatever cap applies (see above).

When we created a new account in both our names with the council for bin charges they enquired about PPS numbers for tax relief and I was informed that for the one account only one person can claim tax relief and they retained my information only. So only one person is able to claim tax relief on the one bin!
