Tax Relief on Prosthetic Eye?

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to claim tax relief on a prosthetic eye? My OH has a glass eye and it needs to be replaced. If it's possible to claim tax back, it would make more sense to get it this year rather than next year.

Thanks,
Ginger

Orthoptic or similar treatment prescribed by a practitioner (Routine Ophthalmic Care - i.e. Sight Testing, Spectacles, Contact Lenses, does NOT qualify for tax relief);
I have quoted this from the revenue website. I would suggest that if a practitioner recommends that it is replaced that it may be allowable. You can get an opinion on this by the Revenue either by registering on line with the PAYE service (unless you are self assessed) or by writing or visiting your local tax office.

My feeling on this would be that if it IS necessary it would be reclaimable.

I was looking at this also and wondering if it comes in the section [broken link removed], possibly like other prostheses, legs etc. The Revenue wording "on the advice of a practitioner" as you also mentioned is probably the important part. If the practitioner is a registered medical practioner such as opthalmic surgeon, GP etc. then more likely to be allowable, if the practitioner is the regular optician then likely not. I would be surprised if an item such as this would not qualify.

Thanks for replies.
He went to see the specialist (an ocularist?)last month and the specialist told him that he should have it replaced every 2-5 years, as the shape of the socket changes over time. He's had his current eye for around 10 years, so it should not be a problem to get a letter to this effect. I'll do a bit more research on if prostheses are allowable.

Hi,

Just to add here that medical expenses relief is not available on what is counted as routine opthalmic expenses (eye tests, glasses etc.). I don't think what you have described here could be considered "routine" and therfore would be allowable.

Claim it. Full stop.

Revenue aren't going to argue over a Prosthetic Eye.

I've claimed before for a prosthetic testicle for a client - no problems
