Tax relief on mortgage payments

Hi all

Long time reader, first post - love this site!

Me and my fiance are soon starting our self build.
Can somebody please tell me what way tax relief works on repayments?
I know there is a higher threshold for a married couple for the tax relief, but does this mean if we were married, we would get higher tax relief than if we were single?

1) If we applied now (before married), would we only get single persons tax relief? is this lower?
2) If we then got married in 2 years time, would the tax relief change to a married persons relief?
3) If we didn't apply for tax relief at all until we were married, in 2 years time, could we claim back for the previous 2 years repayments i.e. get a lump sum back?

Sorry if this seems confusing.

Thanks for your help

Thank you for your help Norfbank - I appreciate it.
Although is states on the revenue page that the higher threshold is married/widowed - can a couple (not married) still claim under this bracket?

No probs.

Yes, joint borrowers get same relief as married couple once both first time buyers.
