Tax relief on medical expenses

I have been told by a friend that when I claim tax relief on family medical expenses (MED 1) I can claim gross expenditure and that I do not have to deduct payments received from the VHI. Is this correct. Surely not !

You do need to make deductions for payments received from VHI. The form and instructions are available on [broken link removed].

No. You can only claim tax relief on otherwise unreimbursed qualifying medical expenses over the individual (€125) or multiple (€250) threshold. If you have expenses reimbursed by a private medical insurance company then you cannot claim tax relief on these. See [broken link removed]:
Relief Due

Any Non-Reimbursed Expenditure (i.e. after VHI, BUPA, Health Board, Compensation Refunds)

No relief due on:

  • First €125 per person per year
  • First €250 per year for two dependent persons or more.
