Hi There,

Mrs sully is currently studying two approved courses to the value of Apporx 7000 can she claim back 7000*20%= €1400 or is there a limit to what she can claim.

I think it said else where there is an undergrad limit of 5K. But my wife is doing an BSC undergrad(Approx3k) and a Masters(4.5K)as well so does this limit apply to her?

Hi graham,

I read all that but that doesn't answer the query. Is there a limit to what you can claim back on fees?

Can i assume if there is no limit mentioned on the revenue forms that i can claim for both my wifes courses?

Sorry, thought it was in the leaflet. The max credit for academic years 2005/06 to 2007/08 is €1,000 which is equivalent to €5,000 fees at 20%. (Section 473A Taxes Consolidation Act 1997)

Ok I thought i would get away with the Undergraduate credit of 5000 as the second course is a masters and there is no mention of a max credit on masters at all...

Do you still think that the undergraduate max credit applies to masters as well, i know its an unusual situation as not too many ppl will be in this situation. Ie studying a undergrad degree and a Masters at the same time...

I read that other Thread but that doesn't explain this situation, unless i am missing something!

But what about [broken link removed]:

It is also important to note that relief is available for one course per individual in a tax year.

I'm reading from the Irish Taxation Institute's Taxation Summary for 2007 page 24 part 1.3.18 ( cant find this online anywhere or I'd link it )

It says : - "Relief is available on qualifying fees, per course, per academic year e.g., if a taxpayer has paid qualifying fees in respect of three dependents attending college in an academic year, he/she is entitled to relief up to the maximum limit in respect of each of these dependents. "

This may suggest that relief is available on both but the example is for different attendees. In your case it might be best to check with Revenue. A call to your district might help clarify. It is a slightly unusual situation and unfortunately the texts don't really seem to cover it.

Ok Thanks you both for all your help.

I will give a buzz to the revenu to see what they say and will update when i find out.

As i think that my wife started Her Masters in september 06 and the undergrad can be done over 5 years so she can calim for some years of that at least. I suppose it depends then on which cost more in the overlapping years. I will speak to the missus tonight about it.
