Tax relief for Rent paid

Hi,

I've a query about rent that I hope somebody can help me with. I have been paying rent for about 5 years now and have never claimed it against tax.

At the moment I have been paying €425/month since last October. I am single & living in rented accommodation. How do I go about writing the rent off against tax? Do I need to tell my landlord? Should he be registered officially as a landlord, what are the repercussions if he's not?

Also, should I claim last year's rent separately to the rent I’m paying this year?

Apologies about all the questions, hopefully someone can help!

Cheers!

You can backdate tax reclaims by 4 years max.
