Im not sure if anyone will be able to help but here goes. I attended the gaeltacht in 2005 as reqirement to gaining my SCG exam - (primary irish exam course for those qualified outside the state) I paid 1100 euro to attend the gaeltacht for 3 weeks - however the dept of education refunded me 500 upon successful completion of the SCG. My query is can i claim tax on 1100 or even on the 600 euro paid and if i can how do i go about it?

Simply Joe and mathepac, where is the confusion? €1,100 was paid, a refund of €500 was received and Brookner wants to know if a deduction/credit can be claimed for the full €1,100 or the €600 end cost - fairly simple really so not sure of the reasons for the smart alec responses.
Brookner, what is the purpose of the SCG exam? Do you require it as part of your employment? You wont be able to claim anything for the €500 refunded as it was not a cost to you but there maybe some argument for the €600 balance

The original post has been changed. Previously said €400 refunded. However point is still well made. Sorry!
