Hello,
my mother is due to receive money from a court settlement as a result of an action that she brought against a company. The court action was the result of a case related to my late father who was employeed by the company. Some time after leaving the company he developed an illness that was caused by his work environment and subsequently died.

My question is does my mother have an obligation to pay tax on this money ?

Thanks & regards

Has her solicitor given an opinion on this? Not sure if it's totally relevant in this case but [broken link removed] might be of interest to her.

Well the initial indication from the solicitor was that any tax related issues were outside of their realm of expertise ...

Yes, solicitors will deal with CAT and CGT but this, if anything, would have income tax implications- and/or implications for any social welfare/medical card entitlements which are outside our field of expertise.

Be aware that if you are on a means tested pension or if on a medical card (if under 70) you will be assessed and you may lose both
